12 Months Out: Lay the Foundation

Start with the three decisions that drive everything else: your budget, your guest count, and your date (or at least your season). These three numbers determine what venues you can afford, what vendors are available, and the scope of every other choice. Have an honest budget conversation with anyone contributing financially before you start spending.

Book your venue first. Everything else follows from where and when. Popular venues book 12-18 months out, especially for Saturday evenings in peak season (May through October). Once the venue is locked, book your photographer and officiant - these vendors are typically one-per-date.

9-10 Months Out: Lock in Key Vendors

Book your caterer, DJ or band, videographer, and florist. Request detailed proposals and compare what's included. Read contracts carefully before signing. Put deposit dates and payment schedules on a shared calendar. Start dress shopping - most bridal gowns take 4-6 months to order and 2-3 months for alterations.

6-8 Months Out: Details Take Shape

Send save-the-dates. Book your hotel room block, transportation (shuttle buses or limo), and rehearsal dinner venue. Order bridesmaid dresses (they need time for ordering and alterations too). Schedule cake tastings and food tastings with your caterer. Begin planning your ceremony structure with your officiant.

3-5 Months Out: Finalize and Confirm

Send invitations (aim for 8 weeks before the wedding). Finalize your floral designs with your florist. Choose readings and music for the ceremony. Book hair and makeup artists and schedule a trial. Apply for your marriage license. Create your wedding website with logistics details for guests. Finalize your registry.

1-2 Months Out: Tighten Everything Up

Confirm final head count with your caterer and venue (most need a final number 2 weeks before). Write your seating chart. Confirm timeline details with every vendor. Break in your wedding shoes. Write personal vows if you're doing them. Prepare toasts and thank-you gifts. Schedule final dress fitting.

Wedding Week

Confirm arrival times with all vendors. Prepare final payments and tips in labeled envelopes. Pack an emergency kit (stain remover, sewing kit, pain relievers, phone charger, snacks). Delegate day-of tasks to your wedding party or coordinator. Lay out everything you'll need on the wedding day the night before. Get sleep. You've done the work - now enjoy it.
